Patching a Partially Collapsed Drain Under a Factory

CDNW Drainage & Utility Mapping’s patching and cutting team is known for its high-quality work. This case study details a recent project where the team’s expertise saved the day for a factory facing a collapsed drain.

The Challenge

A partial drain collapse was discovered under a factory floor at a depth exceeding 3 meters. The ground around the drain had risen, making excavation highly expensive and impractical due to the factory’s inability to shut down.

The Solution

Alex Maudsley, the team leader, devised a solution using a combination of jetting and patching techniques.

  • Initial Jetting: The team carefully jetted the drain to remove debris and broken pipe fragments from the collapsed section.
  • Glass Shards Discovery: The jetting revealed a significant amount of broken glass, likely originating from the factory’s operations. This ruled out using the IMS Robotic Cutter, which could have further opened the defect for patching.
  • Extended Jetting: Due to the presence of glass, the team continued jetting for approximately six hours to thoroughly clean the drain.
  • Patch Installation: Finally, a patch was successfully installed, eliminating the need for excavation and ensuring the factory’s continued operation at full capacity.

The Outcome

CDNW Drainage & Utility Mapping’s patching and cutting team’s skillful use of jetting and patching techniques saved the factory from a costly and disruptive excavation project. The team’s ability to adapt and find solutions for complex drainage issues is a testament to their expertise.
